Namibia -
Life
in the Middle of the Desert
First-time visitors quickly learn that
Namibia's attractions merit more time than a
typical tour extension allows. Unique scenic
attractions and great wildlife parks make
this vast but little-known country on the
southern Atlantic Ocean a worthy destination
of its own. Here the people are few and far
between and life is at its most basic.
Travelers with a taste for adventure can
walk amid vast, beautiful, uninhabited
terrain of the unique Namib Desert,
stretching 1000 miles along the Atlantic
Coast, where remote trails lead through
soaring dunes and harsh 'moonscapes' dotted
with strange contorted plants thousands of
years old. They will find ancient rock
etchings, and interact with traditional
tribal groups unchanged by modern times. In
the north, the spectacular Etosha Pan
National Park depicts the miracle of
survival in the desert, and how vast herds
of specialized animals and rare plants
manage to adapt to the harshest desert
conditions.
